Just a couple of weeks after Father’s Day 2010, critically acclaimed rapper and poet TUMI releases a brand new single to radio. The song is appropriately titled “Family Plan” and it features on Tumi’s SAMA-nominated album, ‘Whole Worlds’ – widely seen as one of the best hip-hop albums ever released locally.
For this father-of-one, raised by a single mother, fatherhood and family is something that resonates deeply with both his personal and creative life.
“I have always been told I was raised in a broken home because of the single parent environment,” Tumi says. “I can assure you nothing about it felt broken to me. My mum worked it out, with the cards she was given, mistakes were made, and miracles happened.”
For Tumi, the multiple variations of the 21st century family mean “we all kinda ‘Freestyle’ our way through parenthood. There is traditional wisdom on the matter but when you add untraditional circumstances such as apartheid, same sex households, single mums, rapper dads, and foster homes, and you see people come out the other end beautiful and assured it becomes clear that we all have a perfect little ‘Family Plan’.”
Indeed, Tumi’s multiple roles as a recording artist, busy international touring act and creative entrepreneur (through his own Motif Records label) means he knows what it’s like to have to find different ways of bringing fatherhood into his life; how to make his own unique “Family Plan” work.
“Family Plan” is one of the standout tracks on ‘Whole Worlds’: seeped in emotion and backed by rich musical production, the track features a guest spot by Xhosa singer-songwriter, MXO whose husky vocals add significantly to an already compelling track.
Released alongside the new single is an accompanying music video, produced by Kalash Filmworks of Johannesburg. An epic “road-trip” themed story, the shoot saw Tumi criss-crossing the country and in typical Tumi style it has a powerful twist in the tale.
Tumi was among the South African artists featured on the spectacular FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Celebration Concert that took place at Orlando Stadium on June 10th. He then joined superstar Shakira on stage for a rousing version of her hit ‘Hips Don’t Lie’.
Supported by Levi’s® Original Music, Tumi has also been busy with a full schedule of dates throughout the country including performing at the Sony 3D Stage at Nelson Mandela Square (Joburg) on July 6th, Joburg’s Alex Theatre on July 30th and the Mystic Boer in Bloemfontein on 31st July
